It may not be a battle of butter side up or butter side down in our house, but up until last Christmas there were plenty of butter battles happening in our abode. You see, I grew up on margarine. We always called it butter. We had "real" butter that we kept in the fridge for cooking, but for spreading- it was the imitation variety. It is not that we wanted to eat unhealthy- heck I grew up with almost all of my food coming from the garden or field. I am quite certain it is because of the spreadablity factor. Sorry butter- you never win that battle. You always end up tearing my precious bread.
Fast forward to my own home and my husband kindly asked why I still buy "spread" and when I explained about the spreadability factor he simple said you slice gently and lay on the bread- not spread. Seriously? How else does one get delicious warm melty goodness on the bread?
So by luck or by chance my brother in law got us a butter crock last holiday. You know- those little simple crocks you fill with butter and leave on the counter. It has been 3 months and I can safely say I think the butter battles in our house are done. It works marvelous- real butter and totally spreadable.
So in case you were hesitant and are a butter spreader like myself- go for it. I don't think you will be disappointed. Now whether you spread on the top or the bottom, well I will leave that one to you! If you are a Seuss-a-holic like myself here is a little Butter Battle video treat!
