Amazing how a couple weeks in a midwest summer makes the weeds go crazy! I spent part of my "freedom" weekend whilst the boys play working on some suburban gardening. I am experimenting with putting some plants destined for the wood in pots till the fall when I move them over. I also weeded the herb gardening before the weather took a shift any brought in a cooling storm. I was able to harvest a good amount of comfrey to make into an infused oil.
This is one of my favorite finds that the boys dug up from the woods- a good reminder on these hot summer days to water the garden when mother nature forgets! I found it buried under the weeds and put it out full and front in the garden bed!
A brief review of a super sweet little book for little ones with a healthy mix of wonderful imagination and free play- Mud Pies and Other Recipes by Marjorie Winslow. I have the recently re-printed version done by the New York Review Children's Collection. The original was printed in the early 60's- it brings back memories of my childhood when I would make "soup" from some water soaked with basil leaves- my imaginary friends loved it! I highly recommend this sweet little book- I will keep you posted on what "mud pies" my fella create with it this week!
I am counting down the minutes today till my boys return home- I miss them like crazy and look forward to packing up my baked beans, tracking down some sparklers, and head out to be with my family this afternoon.
Happy birthday dear ol' country- thanks for keeping us all beautiful and unique in our freedom!
