ahh- the customs are all finished at the shop, my daily trek to the post office is pretty much done and I am dreaming of sugar plums! Well actually just savoring cups of tea over Christmas lists and finishing up making goodies for friends and family.
Jasper's class all made paper stockings and they are bringing a little something to put in each of their stockings at school tomorrow before Winter Break. We decided to make little monster ornaments to put in each one, so the monsters don't feel booted out of the season by all of the snowmen and reindeer! We had alot of fun and it was so easy I thought I would put up some quick instructions for you if you are looking for a last minute idea of stuff your kiddos can make:
Step 1- gathering your materials- we used 1.5 inch wood discs that you can get at both Hobby Lobby or Michaels commonly, usually come in a bag of 22-24 for around 2-3$- or I get mine in bulk from Casey's Wood and Etsy. Also gather some rubber stamp carving material and carving tools- I love Mastercarve the best.
Step 2- Have you kiddo trace one of the discs, and draw art on the inside- of course it was monster for us!
Step 3 & 4- Take tracing paper and pencil and trace the art for the inside of the disc. Once you have the design traced, flip you design face down on the carving material and use finger nail and rub on the back of the design to trace the design to the carving material.
Step 5 & 6- carve away your desired negative space, stamp up and see what you need to keep carving away until you have a design you like. Watch those carving tools- very sharp and always carve away from yourself and digits!
Step 7- Use exacto or scissors to cut out circle shape- I like to use old wood spools to attach the stamp to for ease of stamping. Now you are ready to stamp- I recommend ink designed for wood that I have always used- Versacraft or prior known as Fabrico- heat set the ink, I use my embosser and then drill your hole, seal with beeswax polish and add string, love that red and white baker's yarn!
Ta-Da- you have a fun little tag of your kiddo's art that can be given as ornaments, used as gift tags, use them on old jars full of yummies for gift giving, etc. . .- plus now you have a stamp of their art work that you and they can use over and over!
Hope you enjoy this really brief tutorial to last minute fun! We had fun making 25 monsters- start to finish about 2 hours of time. Keep on crafting!
