Do you ever have something that you see that you fall in love with but just can't quite get it out of your system? Okay it actually happens alot for me, but about a year ago I vended at an Autumn Faire at a local Waldorf Cooperative. It was so neat, they had the kids go through the process of grinding wheat, making dough, making fry bread, and then delicious eating! The object of said affection that I saw was a wood Farina grain mill. I just love it! Well I have still been thinking about it almost a year later. I almost, almost got a used one off a Craigslist in Texas last week and the gal decided to hold onto it- I really don't blame her at all! So I decided it was time to do something about it to raise the money to purchase one for both the boys in our house and also to take to The Womb Room during storytime.
The boys and I read our favorite version of the story, the Paul Galdone version, talked about the pieces that would be in the set and helped me find the vintage flour sack fabric- remember that trip to the antique mall last week! Last night I finished up the sets and listed them, I am making a limited amount of 4 sets which will equal the price of the mill. The dog and cat in the set I made for the boys mirror our dog Zot and cat Escher but since these are made to order they can be any color desired.
I have been wanting to make this story set for a while so this was a good excuse to develop it! Another great way to teach and show kids about where our food comes from, I am on the hunt also for some local grain growers for some wheat!
Just for fun, I have an extra copy of the book "The Little Red Hen" that I will giveaway to celebrate our family fundraiser- leave a comment between now and Sunday at midnight and you will be entered in the giveaway for the book- the Galdone version of course! Do you have a favorite version of this story or a favorite wheat recipe??
