Many times when I least expect it, two of what you would think were completely random things except that they begin with the same letter unite into my world in harmonious wonderful ways! Hang tight and you will understand just how bikes and birth can be in the same sentance!
I am sure I am not the only mama that gets all weepy and reminescent around her child's birthdays. For me it starts when I remember also going into labor. I can remember this day just like it was 4 years ago. It was sunny, I was 43 and half week pregnant with my second baby. I would have already done a herbal labor brew recommended by my midwife. My doctor would be stopping by to do another round of accupuncture. After a nap and dinner on my deck I would have talked to my then 3 year old son who was so excited to be spending the night with my folks. The evening progressed with mild rushes and I ate some wonderful dark chocolate. 10:30 that night I knew this was it- the last week and half was just the practice and this was it . . .powerful. I worked hard throughout that night and into the next day when my little Silas entered the world. I could not imagine not having that experience and am continually honored to have my soul partner with me, my friends, my doctor and my midwife in presence- it definitely marked my soul to push out this little person that I made with together with my love, then grew him in my body! I got so bloody teary just watching him eat his dinner last night with guacamole spread allover his face!
So tomorrow we will be eating and toasting to my little Silas who entered the world just about lunch time April 18th 4 years ago! Makes for a fun lunch time each year!
I am of course driven to continue to spread the amazing experience I had with others even though I am done having children. These two books have been setting on my desk all week begging to be written about and I thought today was not a more perfect day. What drew me to the first book was the picture of on the cover. The hilarous thing is that this is the same exact style of bike I have been researching to get- a step through Dutch style bike. Lucky my hubby is an avid biker and is helping me find just the right one! Of course this would be a midwife on the bike- how is that for a message that this is the right bike! The book is called The Midwife by Jennifer Worth and is memoir of a London midwife. I am really looking forward to this read.
The other book is called The Blue Cotton Gown by Patricia Harman and is also a midwife's memoir- I am really looking forward to reading these both and reliving my own memories with my midwife who helped me with my nutrition and walked that birth road journey with me!
If you are interested there is a program also in place where you can help purchase a midwife a bike in developing countries so she can see more women- sounds really great, and alsohere is a great video to watch to see how a midwife in Africa used a bike to help her village women.
Oh and just one more birth connection with the bike we will be celebrating my hubby's birthday by doing a really fun bike ride this year- he is so excited! Hopefully I will have my new bike by then!
